Biocompatibility Screening
Samples printed with TPU 90A Powder were evaluated in accordance with ISO 10993-1:2018. The source testing reported the following outcomes. These results do not establish that a finished device or application is biocompatible; the manufacturer remains responsible for application-specific validation.
| Standard | Assessment | Reported Result |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 10993-5:2009 | Cytotoxicity | Non-cytotoxic |
| ISO 10993-23:2021 | Irritation | Non-irritant |
| ISO 10993-10:2021 | Sensitization | Non-sensitizer |

Interpreting Compatibility Results
Weight change is a screening indicator, not a complete compatibility determination. Acetone, xylene, butyl acetate, and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether produced comparatively large changes in the 24-hour source test. Validate the actual chemical concentration, temperature, exposure time, cyclic loading, swelling, hardness, dimensions, and strength before release.
Process and Material Notes
Formlabs reports equivalent Fuse 1 and Fuse 1+ 30W results within experimental uncertainty. The 20% refresh rate supports a blend containing 20% fresh powder and 80% reclaimed powder, subject to the manufacturer’s process instructions and powder-management requirements.
Design and Validation Considerations
- Account for anisotropy: published elongation is 310% in X/Y and 110% in Z, while tear resistance is 66 kN/m in X/Y and 39 kN/m in Z.
- Consider compression set and temperature together when designing seals, cushions, and components under sustained strain.
- Specify functional dimensions, hardness, surface requirements, sealing interfaces, and inspection criteria during application review.
- Test the final geometry after all cleaning and post-processing, especially for repetitive flexing, chemical contact, skin contact, or safety-critical use.
